WATER PURIFICATION PLANT OBSERVATION

Nehru College of Nursing  had an opportunity to visit  observation visit to water purification plant at Malampuzha. The 30 students had visited the water purification plant. safe and readily available water is important for public health, whether it is used for drinking, domestic use, food production and recreational purposes.

Water treatment is important to health because the availability of fresh water is limited in the earth and demand is high. it is important to protect the health. The harmful chemicals and metals and other contaminants present in the water are dangerous for health of human and other organisms living on this plant.

There are types of water purification plant working at Malampuzha which consists of 12 MCD, 9 MCD and 45 MCD. there are 5 steps in the purification of water which includes aeration coagulation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection. In aeration the water is mixed with air. In the next step, coagulation, the coagulant {alam, lime} is added to the water for regulating its turbidity and PH. In sedimentation, the water and sediments are separated. filtration is done by filter bed and the last step disinfection is done by adding chlorine.

In 45MCD, plant slow sand filtration method is used. aeration in this plant is done by cascade method. When there is a change in PH or turbidity, the coagulations are added in the ratio of 4:2. Circle type sedimentation is done in this plant. 12 filter beds are used which is made up of sand. In disinfection, adequate amount of chlorine is added to the filtered water which is only use for drinking purpose.

In 9MCD plant rapid sand filtration is used aeration is done by spray method. After aeration, coagulants are added. conical type sedimentation is done in this plant. 2 filter beds are used which is made up of anthracene. In disinfection adequate amount of chlorine is added to the filtered water.
