VISIT TO MEAT TECHNOLOGY UNIT, MANNUTHY
Access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food is key to sustaining life and promoting good health. Reviewing the available statistics, The CDC estimates that each year 48 million people get sick from a foodborne illness, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die from food poisoning. Meat has exerted a crucial role in human evolution and is an important component of a healthy and well balanced diet due to its nutritional richness. Unprocessed meat will spoil or rot within hours or days as a result of infection with, and decomposition by, bacteria and fungi. Failure in maintaining meat hygiene may pose serious public health hazards and therefore evaluation of meat for meat borne pathogens which can cause diseases of public health importance is very important
As a part of community health nursing requirement Nehru college of Nursing organized a visit to the MEAT TECHNOLOGY UNIT, MANNUTHY for the 2nd year BSc Nursing students on 4th Aug 2022. Considering the importance of meat in human nutrition, the Kerala Agricultural University had conceived the idea of developing a modern Meat Plant capable of undertaking the responsibilities of teaching, research and extension, almost two decades ago. The main objective of this visit was to make the students aware about the importance of meat hygiene, infrastructure facilities, regular production, processing and marketing of meat and meat products. In the visit they had an excellent theory session which explained about production, processing and marketing of meat and after they had a visit to slaughtering session of the unit. This was really a great deal of illuminating experience for the students.
